More than modern day heroes as we are
dubbed by the government to cover their guilt, OFWs are actually modern
sacrificial lambs on the altar of Labor Export Policy (LEP)
A very long list of victims who died
in the LEP’s reaping fields year after year so long that some was not even
recorded.
Almost two years ago, single mother Remedios Rias Bacoto left this
town for a two-year work contract in Malaysia, pursuing a dream of a better
life for herself and her only child.
Last week, the 35-year-old domestic
worker came home in a coffin, her death shrouded in mystery and suspicions of
foul play. Aside fron a sketchy Malaysian Police report, no further
investigation was done, or requested by the POLO Office in Malaysia.
A few weeks ago, another OFW was
martyred in Libya. He was Antonio Espares, who was kidnapped and beheaded by
Libyan militiamen. He is the father of seven children and his bereaved wife was
left alone with no resources to keep the family up.
They are victims of our government’s to
much reliance on the remittances of OFWs for development. Instead of crerating
jobs in the country, they preferred to export the work-force of the country,
creating a serious social tragedy.
How many more OFW has to die before the
government would open their eyes to what really is happening to these workers.
How many more deaths would it takr before they see the long, long line of
caskets that arrived at NAIA, since they began their Labor Export Policy? How
many more OFW would be sacrificed at the altar of LEP in their worship of
foreign exchange remittances?
We convey our most heartfelt condolence
to the bereaved families of our beloved brothers and sisters who fell in the
field of labor abroad and condemn in
strongest terms the government forits labor Export Policy.
HONOR TO THE MARTYRS OF LEP!
CONDEMN THE GOVERNMENTS LABOR EXPORT
POLICY!
JOBS AT HOME, NOT ABROAD!
